UC and Cal State Approved Courses

A-G Requirements

High School, for all students, is the pathway to a future driven by desires of the years beyond.  Chaffey District Online High School, mirroring the philosophy of the Chaffey Joint Union High School District, will prepare students to meet or exceed academic standards, develop social responsibility and acquire the skills necessary for personal growth.  Knowing the importance of preparing students to be college ready the curriculum design of the CDOHS student will be set to meet the eligibility requirements for admission to schools in the University of California or California State University systems.  With this in mind it is important course curricular offerings meet the minimum eligibility requirement for admission.  CDOHS is pleased to announce thatThe University of California Office of the President (UCOP) has certified that Apex Learning courses fulfill the “a-g” subject requirements for freshman admission to the UC school system. 

The following illustrates the minimum level of academic preparation students ought to achieve in high school to undertake university level work.  A-g courses must have a grade of C- or higher to meet a-g requirements.  Listed below are the a-g requirements:


(a) History / Social Science– Two years, including one year of world history, cultures, and historical geography and one year of us history or one-half year of us history and one-half year of civics or American government.


(b) English– Four years of college preparatory English that include frequent and regular writing, and reading of classic and modern literature.


(c) Mathematics– ( Four years recommended) Three years of college preparatory mathematics that include the topics covered in elementary and advanced algebra and two- and three-dimensional geometry.


(d) Laboratory Science– Two years of laboratory science providing fundamental knowledge in at least two of these three disciplines: biology, chemistry, and physics.


  • Online lab science course require a minimum of 20% wet-lab work to be considered acceptable a-g course.  Students enrolled in CDOHS lab science courses will attend lab science on the CDOHS site.


(e) Language Other Than English– Two years of the same language other than English.


(f) Visual & Performing Arts– One year, including dance, drama/theater, music, or visual art.


(g) College Preparatory Elective– One year (two semesters), chosen from additional "a-f" courses beyond those used to satisfy the requirements above, or courses that have been approved solely for use as "g" electives.
